The Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, Poland

John’s affinity for Europe and his love for cultural exchange, in general, is nothing new to anyone who knows him even just a little bit. Accepting the invitation to visit and work with students and faculty at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, Poland this November, was as easy as blinking. A week abroad for John, featuring only positive highlights and the opportunity to nurture new friendships internationally.

The three day artist residence consisted of a Masterclass, focused rehearsals and a performance with the Felix Jazz Orchestra, directed by Michal Szlempo. The concert featured large jazz ensemble works by Michal Szlempo, as well as John’s pieces, Cheeks and Don’t Jive the Hitman. John also performed with a small group composed of Bydgoszcz Academy of Music professors, Michal Szlempo (pno), Piotr Olszewski (gtr), Grzegorz Nadolny (bs), Piotr Biskupski (dms) — playing originals including classic Daversa compositions, Some Happy Sh*t and Hara Angelina which also featured vocalist Kamila Abrahamowicz-Szlempo.

The audience, including the President and Dean of Bydgoszcz Academy of Music, happily soaked up all of the evening’s inspired performances. Another visit and concert for next year is already in discussion. This time potentially featuring a full orchestra and choir to perform Justin Morell and John Daversa’s 2021 project, All Without Words: Variations Inspired by Loren.

In December, Michal Szlempo already came to visit the Frost School of Music, observing improvisation, composition, and history classes, as well as attending ensemble rehearsals and concerts.

The honest and warm reception John encountered in Poland were an inspiration and overall enriching experience. More concerts and visits are sure to come. Thank you to everyone at Bydgoszcz Academy of Music!
