Brooklyn Still
As recorded on Wobbly Dance Flower, “Brooklyn Still” is a slow, patient, bluesy, gospel piece that cycles through three keys. I played a movie session once that covered a piece by Van Morrison. The piece transposed the exact content of an 8-bar phrase three times in various keys. I was inspired to try this for myself, and so “Brooklyn Still” was born. It begins in Db, then transposes to Bb, and then D. The feel is deceptively difficult as it toys with 6/8 triplet feel and an evened duple subdivision. The slow, contemplative mood made me think of a black and white photograph of a calm Brooklyn at dawn: a Brooklyn still.
