A Day Is Forever – Like Any Other
Justin Morell says: “In any day, we can go from extreme highs to deep lows, and things can change very quickly and seemingly without notice—it seems we can cover a world of emotion and energy in a single day.”
Loren’s theme is played in this movement very slowly in the highest-sounding voices—at first with muted trumpet and violins, then later in the cellos—harmonized with simple chorale-style chords. The theme is slow enough, and fragmented such that it is difficult to recognize. The trumpet plays the written melody for only a short portion of the movement, but then improvises above the harmonized melody. The guitars paint a rolling, amorphous texture under the strict rhythm of the drums, and the dynamic swells are essential to the shape. Creative use of delays and volume pedal are a necessity.
