Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)
As recorded on American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom, Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) features a female vocal lead throughout with sophisticated orchestration (inspired by Vince Mendoza’s work with Joni Mitchell). The first 2 verses are a slow 5/4, the next 2 move to a double time 5/8, and the last two verses find a slightly slower, more agitated tempo. The harmonic motive utilizes a haunting minor major 7 pitch palette throughout the arrangement. Woody Guthrie’s poetic narrative is heart-wrenching. During the recording of this arrangement, we had to pause several times to emotionally sing through the vocal lyrics.
