Bare Your Soul
As recorded on Live at Catalina’s, Vol. I, Bare Your Soul is a jazz ballad platform for jazz trumpet. There is an a cappella development section for the winds that alludes to classical suspensions and sensibilities (a la Satie’s Gymnopedie No. 1), as well as a lyrical written solo for the lead trumpet which reaches a written high G. There are surprising moments in the piece, as the ensemble plays subito fortissimo stabs, going from extreme soft to extreme loud. Formal Structure is AABA.
