Missing Platelets
Missing Platelets is the final movement of the suite, “A Tribute to Dee Barton”, as recorded on Live at Catalina’s, Vol. 1. The title comes from a stay in the hospital, where I was informed that I had a dangerously low platelet count in my blood. I wrote the tune in the hospital. The melody utilizes bop and blues vocabulary with a medium-up, straight-ahead jazz feel. There is ample solo space for the trumpet and tenor saxophone as well as a “high-note” trumpet solo toward the end. The chart highlights the low brass and includes a driving saxophone soli, followed by a powerful shout chorus. The formal structure is AABA.
