Moments of Reality
As recorded on Live at Catalina’s, Vol. 2, Moments of Reality is a solemn jazz ballad inspired by the musical style of Charles Mingus in sections. The melody was written late at night in a bar on a napkin. It features a written lyrical solo by the trumpet as well as the guitar, however whenever the guitar plays the melody, the pace is twice as fast (a la Blue In Green from Kind of Blue). There is no improvisation. The melody is continually passed around the ensemble, sometimes rhythmically staggered and with counter melodies. The mood is ominous, yet optimistic.
