Invisible Things
Justin Morell says: “Loren sometimes seems to notice little things that I would never see. You can tell by the way he looks at things, or how he can be fascinated by light, the way a string moves in the air, etc. He is always aware of what is happening around him, hearing every detail, even if he does not seem to show it.”
This fifth variation is the most still of the set. Much of the movement features the sound of non-vibrato strings with choir, alternating with a wind choir. The soloist is tacet for the opening and closing sections of the variation, so this allows the soloist a little time to rest when played as part of the complete cycle. The solo section allows for much interaction between the trumpet and piano, while the guitars carry the basic harmonic framework and the strings weave a subtle counterpoint. The variation is built around an upside-down version of Loren’s theme, played in the lowest-sounding voices.
