Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
As recorded on Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of The Beatles, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds opens with a solo piano cadenza, setting the tone for a (English style) piccolo trumpet solo accompanied by the cello, trombone and other members of the orchestra. This chamber style is abruptly interrupted by the brass loudly playing the chorus with a stop-and-start rock feel. Then, there is another intimate chamber music section led by the oboe and bassoon (which can be redistributed to the soprano sax and bass clarinet if more practical), before the string section takes the melody, ultimately leading to another raucous rendering of the chorus from the full orchestra. (Listen for references to Because and Magical Mystery Tour...). There is a rubato guitar solo that can be played by one player, or broken up into trading between 2 guitar players as on the recording. The next surprise is that the tempo drastically slows down for effect before snapping back up, a tempo. As the arrangement concludes, the 2 guitar players trade rock riffs as the orchestra adds energy. The closing book-ends with a solo piano cadenza, halting on a contemplative flat 6.
