Good Day Sunshine
As recorded on Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of The Beatles, Good Day Sunshine begins and ends with an open rock/shuffle vamp for the tenor saxophone (groove is inspired by Miles Davis’ Jack Johnson). The key starts in B (the frequency associated with the Sun), and then modulates a tritone away to F. After the big band states the chorus as an introduction, the female vocal takes over lead for the song. The “old-timey” piano from the original Beatles recording is recreated with a brief trombone soli. When the vocal concludes, there is an energetic saxophone soli (first in B, then in F) accompanied by rhythmic interplay from the brass. The vocal returns, travelling though several key changes and rhythmic twists, to return to the book-ended, de-crescendoing tenor saxophone solo (back in B).
