I Saw Her Standing There

As recorded on Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of The Beatles, the initial groove and motives of this reimagination of McCartney’s I Saw Her Standing There are inspired by the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. There is an oscillating half-step motive in Eb that is utilized throughout the arrangement (often times harmonized in whole steps), and there are countless metric twists that surprise and suspend time. After the melody is stated instrumentally, the groove morphs into a Stevie Wonder inspired half-time groove, featuring an extended spoken word segment with bending horns (a la Superstition and I Wish) which layer, climb, and build intensity. After this, the half-step motive serves as a segue returning to The Beatles’ original key of E to state the chorus with male vocal. At this point, all elements are brought together, the James Brown riffs, the spoken word, and of course the original sung melody. Then, there is extended solo trading between the trumpet and saxophone, taking a dynamic and climactic journey through the end of the piece, using the half-step motive, but now inspired by Miles Davis’ In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.
