Learning Simply To Be
Justin Morell says: “This, and the last movement, are both about patience, understanding, empathy, and acceptance.”
Variation 10 begins with the trumpet playing the melody of Loren’s theme upside down against a lilting ostinato in the guitars and winds. While the opening is harmonically stagnant, the music becomes much more chromatic as it develops. Both flutes and the soprano saxophone have short moments in which to come to the foreground with solo passages. The improvised trumpet solo sits atop a contrasting middle section in a slow, heavy-grooving triple meter. The accompaniment is primarily strings, piano, and bass, all of which need to lock in to make this section feel comfortable. More than most of the other movements, this one changes mood several times.
