Seeing It Again for the First Time (Score)

Justin Morell says: “This is about how as a parent of a child with communication challenges, you have to be open to seeing things in a different way—you have to question what you think you know and keep an open mind for everything.”

The third variation recalls the musical language of John Coltrane and Elvin Jones. It’s a relaxed, triplet/swing feel, and should stay loose throughout. The harmonic language is built around the four notes at the end of the first phrase of Loren’s theme (G, A-flat, B, C-sharp, i.e. from the set [0146]). The strings play against the relaxed feel with at first short tremolo interjections that slowly begin to overtake the texture as the solo develops. The choir sings in unison with strings and winds, weaving counterpoint in the background.
