As recorded on Artful Joy, “Good To Be Alive” is a jazz gospel composition co-written with vocalist, Hilary Johnson. I had played a studio session for the iconic gospel artist, Andraé Crouch, and was so inspired by his music that I immediately wrote the chord changes to “Good To Be Alive” after the session. I played through the harmonic structure with Hilary Johnson soon after, and she improvised and wrote the melody with me.
