Junk Wagon
As recorded on Junk Wagon: The Big Band Album, Junk Wagon is a progressive, modern jazz composition containing several meter and feel changes. It is based around a rhythmic cell in 7/4, however the majority of the tune is a double time “Drums ‘n’ Bass” 6/4 feel. Though there are many other time signatures visited (12/8, 5/8, 5/4, & 4/4), the meter changes are intended to feel comfortable and intuitive. After the substantial introduction, driving 7/4 rock section, and 6/4 melody have been stated, there is a raucous trumpet solo (or E.V.I.), followed by a driving guitar solo. Then, the groove breaks down to a tight Neo Soul groove featuring a bass solo as flutes and clarinets accompany. As the rhythm section returns to vamping the 7/4 rock motive, the horns play a conducted slower tempo above the chaos. Eventually, the two tempi sync back together for a rousing finale. Formal Structure is AABAC and Multi-sectional.
